The History of Old Buckenham Hall (OBH)

Old Buckenham Hall (OBH) holds a unique place in educational history as one of England’s most resilient and storied schools. Despite a series of moves since its foundation, OBH has retained the character and values instilled by its founders, Misses Ellen and Margaret Ringer, who established the school in 1862 in a terraced house on Wellington Esplanade, Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Initially created as a Dame School, the institution quickly flourished, prompting the construction of South Lodge, a sturdy four-storey house close to the sea. By the 1920s, the school’s continued success led to a move to Old Buckenham Hall under the leadership of Headmaster T.J.E. Sewell. This marked the beginning of a deep connection between the school and the Sewell family, whose influence extended well into the 21st century.

Despite facing significant challenges, including devastating fires in 1952 and later at Merton Hall, OBH endured. The school ultimately settled in Brettenham, Suffolk, where it has thrived for nearly seven decades. Today, OBH continues to grow, balancing tradition with innovation, making it the perfect setting for modern educational programs.
